Dee Gordon steals another base, still ahead of Maury Wills' pace

Isaiah J. Downing-USA TODAY Sports

Dee Gordon set a new career high with three RBI in the Dodgers, and he tied an LA Dodger record with two triples. But he also found time to wreak a little havoc on the bases as well.

After lofting a single over a drawn-in infield in the sixth inning to score two runs and give the Dodgers a 6-0 lead, Gordon stole second base on rookie Eddie Butler, making his major league debut, and catcher Mike McKenry. On a pitchout.

Gordon is on pace for 94 steals this season.

It was Gordon's 36th steal of the season, keeping him ahead of Wills' record-setting pace in 1962 when the former Dodgers shortstop stole 104 bases. Gordon is also close to the great start by Wills in 1965, when he ended with 94 steals.

Here's Gordon vs. Wills through 62 team games:

Scenario Wills 1962 Wills 1965 Gordon 2014
SB/CS through 62 team games 34/5 41/12 36/4
SB/CS rest of the season 70/8 53/19 TBD
Game No. 63 1-for-3, 0 SB 1-for-4, 0 SB vs. RHP Chacin

The Dodgers in 1962 played their 62nd game on June 10, but Wills wouldn't steal another base until June 17. In 1965, Wills stole a pair of bases against the Giants in the Dodgers' 62nd team game, one each in the fifth and seventh innings against pitcher Bob Shaw and catcher Dick Bertell.

It made Wills the fastest Dodger to 40 steals, in just 59 games in 1965 (62 team games).

Up next

The Dodgers send Zack Greinke to the mound on Saturday afternoon (a 1:10 p.m PT start), facing Jhoulys Chacin for Colorado. Chacin has allowed only 24 steals, and 16 caught stealing, in 119 career games, including 104 starts. Gordon has never stolen a base against Chacin in two career games, but he did however hit his first career home run on May 1, 2012, against Chacin at Coors Field.
