AFL 10/8/13 recap: Desert Dogs play to tie in season opener

Corey Seager, seen here during spring training, returned to Camelback Ranch on Tuesday for the AFL opener - Eric Stephen

The Desert Dogs and the Solar Sox played 11 innings on Tuesday, but that wasn't enough time to get a resolution as the two clubs played to a 8 - 8 tie

The Desert Dogs and Solar Sox played a back and forth game on Tuesday, but the end result was a 8 - 8 tie between the two teams. Mesa plated 3 early runs against starter Alex Meyer (Twins), but Glendale responded with 6 unanswered over the next 4 frames to take the lead. A five run explosion in the 8th by the Sox against reliever Zack Jones (Twins) put them back in front, however a RBI single by Marcus Semien (White Sox) in the bottom of the 9th tied the game for good.

Corey Seager had a solid day at the plate in his AFL debut as he went 2 for 4 with a RBI double and a single. While he struck out in his other two at bats, he earned praise from former scout Bernie Pleskoff who tweeted that he thought Seager "had an outstanding game at the plate." It should be noted that he was in fact playing shortstop, and batted 5th in the lineup.

Brian Cavazos-Galvez was the only other Dodger to play in this contest, and he went 0 for 4 with a walk while playing the entire game in left field. Given that the Desert Dogs used 8 pitchers in this game and none of them were from the Dodgers, I'm guessing that at least one will throw in relief for Glendale on Wednesday.

Coming up: It will be the same teams playing at the same time on Wednesday, with Michael Lorenzen (Reds) taking the mound for the Desert Dogs. He will be opposed by Sammy Solis (Nationals) of the Solar Sox.
