2013 Dodger draft profiles: 3B Andrew McWilliam, 31st round

The 31st selection of the Dodgers was Andrew McWilliam, a 3rd baseman from Westview High School in San Diego

Summary: 31st round pick Andrew McWilliam, drafted out of Westview High School in San Diego as a 3rd baseman, is listed at 6'4" and 185 pounds. Andrew is 18 years old.

Background information: Andrew is the son of Tigers scout Tim McWilliam, who also played in the Padres organziation but never made it to the big leagues. In high school Andrew played both 1st base and 3rd base, but the Dodgers drafted him as a 3rd baseman because that is where his value lies. During his junior year McWilliam hit .320 with 3 homers and 10 doubles, and he also stole 8 bases. During his senior season Andrew was even better as he hit .431 with a .504 on base percentage to go along with 4 long balls.

Scouting report: At 6'4" McWilliam seems to have plenty of power potential, and as mentioned he did hit 4 homers this past season to go along with 8 doubles. He also seems to have a relatively compact swing despite his height, which should limit his strikeouts. Defensively he doesn't look all that strong based on the video below, and if he continues to grow it might be tough for him to stick on the left side of the infield.

Signing Status: McWilliam might be one of the tougher players for the Dodgers to sign given that he is a high school player who was picked in one of the later rounds. On his twitter account when asked if he was going to sign, he said "not sure yet..most likely going to college but definitely gonna consider signing". With the Dodgers draft budget constraints it seems the most they could give Andrew is $100,000, which may or may not be enough to lure him away from a potential college scholarship. Speaking of college I couldn't actually find which one he had committed to, although as of last year his list of potential schools included the University of Arizona, UC Irvine, and the University of San Diego.
