2013 Dodger draft profiles: LHP Crayton Bare, 28th round

The 28th selection of the Dodgers was Crayton Bare, a left handed pitcher from Baylor

Summary: 28th round pick Crayton Bare, drafted out of Baylor as a left handed pitcher, is listed at 5'11" and 185 pounds. Crayton is 22 years old and will turn 23 in September.

Background information: Crayton played his high school ball at the same school as Clayton Kershaw, and in fact their time at Highland Park overlapped one year. As a senior in high school Crayton was spectacular with a 0.39 ERA and 73 strikeouts. Unfortunately he didn't get any scholarship offers, so he had to walk on to the Baylor baseball team where he was used sparingly over his first two seasons. Over the final two years of his career, however, Bare was one of the team's main relievers. In 2012 Bare had a 1.25 ERA over 21.2 innings with 23 K's, and this past season he struck out 54 over 53.1 frames and posted a 3.38 ERA while recording 5 saves.

Here is good article I found on Crayton, and it's here that I learned he was a business media and entrepreneurship major who started two companies in his spare time. One relates to an iPhone app and the other company creates a type of candy called Chaser Strips.

Scouting report: At 5'11" Crayton obviously doesn't have good size, and he also doesn't have a good fastball. He said himself that "I'm not going to blow anyone away with my fastball, but I can get by with it. I can throw four pitches at any time, so it was the kind of repertoire that made me successful." I'm not exactly sure what those other three pitches are, but he must have some good movement and solid control because he posted solid stats over his college career. His most impressive feat was hold opposing hitters to a .173 batting average in 2012.

Signing Status: As a college senior Crayton didn't have much leverage, and therefore he has already signed his contract. He is currently on the Arizona Dodgers roster, though he has yet to pitch.
