2014 MLB Draft: Dodgers draft Deion Ulmer in 26th round

Holmes Junior College

LOS ANGELES -- With their 26th round pick in the 2014 MLB Draft on Saturday, the Dodgers selected second baseman Deion Ulmer out of Holmes Junior College in Mississippi, with pick No. 789 overall.

The 5'9, 170-pound speedster, who turns 20 on July 18, hit .423/.494/.537 with 14 doubles, 46 runs scored and 36 stolen bases in 39 attempts in 48 games in 2014. He made All-State and All-Region XXIII First Team.

Here is a very brief video of Ulmer from a 2013 Summer League game:

Ulmer was credited to area scout Matt Paul, who now has the chore of trying to convince Ulmer to sign rather than play Division I baseball at Jackson State. Ulmer told his school's website on Saturday he was leaning toward joining the Dodgers:

"School is really important to me, but it's always been a dream of mine to play professional baseball," Ulmer said. "Unless something unordinary happens I don't see myself not going to play for the Dodgers organization this summer. That's what I'm aiming for.

"My area scout is in L.A. right now, and he'll be back in town in a couple of days, and we'll sit down and talk about the money situation," he said. "If it's anywhere in the range of what I want, I'm going to be a Dodger, but if it's not, I'll pursue school and get my education and see if I can do same thing one of the next two years."

Ulmer also pitched for Holmes, going 7-1 with a 2.27 ERA in 18 relief appearances, with 24 strikeouts and 17 walks in 39... innings, in 2014, though he said upon getting drafted, "I think my pitching days are over with."
