Kevin Gregg joins Dodgers spring training as non-roster invitee

Gregg, who signed a minor league contract with the Dodgers, was 3-2 with a 4.95 ERA in 40 games for the Orioles in 2012.

The Dodgers on Sunday announced the signing of right-handed relief pitcher Kevin Gregg to a minor league contract, two days before pitchers and catchers are scheduled to report to Camelback Ranch.

Gregg, who turns 35 in June, was 3-2 with a 4.95 ERA in 40 games with the Orioles in 2012, with 37 strikeouts and 24 walks in 43⅔ innings. He didn't save a single game in 2012, but he saved 143 games from 2007-2011 with the Marlins, Cubs, Blue Jays, and Orioles, never fewer than 22 saves in a season during that span.

In his 10-year career, Gregg is 28-38 with a 4.13 ERA in 509 games, with 585 strikeouts and 287 walks in 638⅔ innings. Gregg's strikeout rate of 18.5% of batters faced was his worst since 2005, and his walk rate of 12.0% was high (the major league rate for relievers in 2012 was 9.0%) but in line with his 11.8% career mark.

The bespectacled pitcher was released by the Orioles last Sept. 14.

The signing of Gregg gives the Dodgers 19 non-roster invitees in big league camp, including seven pitchers.

We'll see what number Gregg is assigned, but the available numbers from zero to 80 are 28, 69, 70, 73, 77, and 78. And this is before figuring out the numbers of Jesus Flores and Peter Moylan, as both are listed as number 76 on the Dodgers' spring training roster.
