The Brewers signed Jeff Suppan to a four year, 42 million dollar contract. The fact that I can write that sentence without the phrase "the worst contract ever" is pretty telling of the current market conditions.
Suppan is a pitcher that puts the ball in play, and then lets the defense handle it. When you have a team that is consistently good defensively like the Cardinals, this works out pretty well. On a team where the only plus defenders are Geoff Jenkins and Corey Koskie, this could be a problem.
Even so, Suppan could still be an average pitcher, simply because, like I said in the post below, the average pitcher is pretty bad these days. I guess that's worth over 10 million a year these days, but it's going to take me a while to accept that.
