The World According To PECOTA

Nate Silver has released the PECOTA projected standings for 2008. Unfortunately since this is subscribers only, I have to talk about things in vague terms. I've thought that the Diamondbacks and the Dodgers were very evenly matched this year, and the computer agrees, predicting that we'll end up in a one game playoff for the last slot in the post season at the end of the year.

As can be expected the way to avoid this fate is obvious, don't give play time to Juan Pierre and Nomar Garciaparra. The projection is based on those two receiving a combined 973 plate appearances this year, and I'm sure handing those at bats to someone else would result in another win somewhere along the line.

Granted, it's also giving Luis Gonzalez 409 plate appearances for us, so there's still some bugs that need to be worked out.
