The Dodgers have opted to have their fifth starter pitch Thursday against the Angels rather than Friday or Saturday against the Yankees, per Dylan Hernandez of the LA Times. Joe Torre said the choice is between Claudio Vargas, who allowed one run in three innings last Thursday for Albuquerque, and Charlie Haeger, who pitched six shutout innings for the Isotopes today. Having Vargas or Haeger pitch Thursday allows both Vicente Padilla and Hiroki Kuroda to pitch against the Yankees with an extra day of rest.
Hernandez also reported that Cory Wade will begin a minor league rehabilitation assignment next week in the Arizona rookie league. Wade underwent shoulder surgery in March.
