Furcal, Blake Progressing Toward Return To Dodgers

The Dodgers infield has hit just .252/.308/.322 this season, a figure that doesn't look like it will rise with today's lineup. However, there may be some good news on the horizon, as both Rafael Furcal and Casey Blake are progressing nicely from their injuries. Furcal went 2-for-3 batting left-handed Saturday night inTucson with the Albuquerque Isotopes, and will face another right-handed pitcher today in Matt Buschmann. Furcal has also been hitting right-handed, where his thumb has given him the most trouble, in the batting cages, and will face left-hander Wade LeBlanc on Monday. It appears Furcal might be ready to join the Dodgers on their upcoming road trip, which begins Friday in Chicago against the White Sox.

Casey Blake practiced without restraint yesterday, fielding balls at third base and taking batting practice. Manager Don Mattingly thinks Blake will be playing with the Isotopes soon. "We'd be happy if he was able to go play [rehab] games when we go on the road," Mattingly said of Blake.

The Dodgers also officially recalled relief pitcher Javy Guerra from Double A Chattanooga, and placed Blake Hawksworth on the 15-day disabled list. Mattingly said the move was made because with Hawksworth out since last Tuesday, he didn't want a short bullpen. Hawksworth is eligible to come off the DL on Friday, May 27 when the Dodgers open a homestand with Florida. Guerra will wear number 54 with the Dodgers.

Juan Uribe, who is 2-for-31 since getting hit on the hand by Carlos Zambrano on May 4, needed a day off, Mattingly said. As a result, the Dodgers are fielding what might be their worst offensive lineup of the season, which is saying something.
