The good news for the Dodgers this week is that they won two games, including a nice comeback win Friday night in Chicago when they were one out away from another loss. They got a big week from their rookie left fielder, and got Rafael Furcal back from the disabled list.
The bad news is that the Dodgers didn't have five rainouts. The team lost five of its seven games, and lost Vicente Padilla and Juan Uribe to the DL. To top that off, Andre Ethier (in a 1-for-30 slump) and Rod Barajas got hurt on Sunday, joining an ever-growing list of black and blue Dodgers.
The Dodgers are a season-high six games under .500, and are sinking in the NL West, not a lot to be confident about. Here's a recap of the week.
Dodger Batter of the Week: Not only did Jerry Sands hit his first big league home run, but he also had his first four-hit game as well, to easily capture this week's honors. Sands blew away the field, hitting .467/.556/.867. "Platoon, my ass," Sands should have been heard saying.
Honorable mention goes to Juan Uribe, who has managed to get hurt during each of his first two hot streaks as a Dodger. Uribe hit .375/.474/.438 for the week, but strained his left hip flexor on Friday, and was placed on the 15-day disabled list on Sunday.
Dodger Pitcher of the Week: For a change, the starting pitching wasn't very good this week. Hiroki Kuroda probably has the best claim to the award, but his bad start on Sunday pushed him out of the running. I'm splitting this award between Kenley Jansen and Scott Elbert, who each pitched scoreless ball out of the bullpen this week. Jansen got the win Friday in Chicago by pitching two scoreless innings late, and Elbert has helped resurrect his career by not allowing a run in five appearances in his latest stint with the big league club.
Week 8 Record: 2-5
21 runs scored (3.00 per game)
34 runs allowed (4.86 per game)
.293 pythagorean winning percentage
Season Record: 21-27
166 runs scored (3.46 per game)
208 runs allowed (4.33 per game)
.398 pythagorean winning percentage (19-29)
Transactions:
- Thursday: Vicente Padilla became the third Dodger to make his second trip to the disabled list this season, placed on the 15-day DL with right radial nerve irritation. The move was retroactive to March 14. Relief pitcher Ramon Troncoso was recalled from Triple A Albuquerque to take Padilla's spot on the roster.
-
Sunday: Rafael Furcal was activated from the disabled list after missing 37 games with a broken left thumb. However, Juan Uribe was placed on the disabled list to make room, with a strained left hip flexor.
Game Results:
- Monday: Brewers 2, Dodgers 1
- Tuesday: Dodgers 3, Brewers 0
- Wednesday: Giants 8, Dodgers 5
- Thursday: Giants 3, Dodgers 1
- Friday: Dodgers 6, White Sox 4 (10)
- Saturday: White Sox 9, Dodgers 2
- Sunday: White Sox 8, Dodgers 3
Upcoming Week: The Dodgers finish their road trip in Houston facing the team with the worst record in the National League, then return home to open a homestand against one of the best teams in the league, the Marlins, who are now without their ace, Josh Johnson.
