As expected, the Dodgers disabled list trip count is now up to 18, as both Jon Garland and Rafael Furcal were placed on the 15-day disabled list before today's game with the Reds. To take their place, the Dodgers have recalled John Ely and Ivan DeJesus.
Ely was one of two Dodger pitchers remaining on the 40-man roster who was not on either the active roster or disabled list, and the other one, Luis Vasquez, made his first appearance in more than six weeks last night with Class A Rancho Cucamonga. The plan is still for Rubby De La Rosa to start Tuesday, and for Ely to pitch out of the bullpen, per Dylan Hernandez of the LA Times. The recall of Ely is a sure sign that Blake Hawksworth is not yet ready to return. Hawksworth is scheduled to pitch another rehab game tonight with the Quakes.
Today's Starters
Clayton Kershaw is coming off his second career shutout in his last start. He has made three starts against the Reds in his career, and has gone at least seven innings in all three, with a 2.53 ERA and 29 strikeouts in 21 1/3 innings. Brandon Phillips is 6-for-10 lifetime against Kershaw, and Joey Votto is 2-for-10 with a home run, but no other Red has more than one hit off Kershaw.
Johnny Cueto has only made five starts this year, after beginning the year on the DL. In those starts he has a 2.20 ERA though is just 2-2. Cueto has made three career starts against the Dodgers, and he is 3-0 with a 5.40 ERA. No Dodger has more than eight career PA against Cueto, but Andre Ethier, Matt Kemp, and Casey Blake all have a home run against Cueto with an OPS north of 1.350.
