Matt Kemp to have left shoulder surgery Friday

Though the Dodgers ended their season with a win, the news wasn't all good on Wednesday. Matt Kemp said after the game that he would have arthroscopic surgery on his left shoulder on Friday. The procedure will be performed by team physician Dr. Neal ElAttrache at The Kerlan Jobe Clinic in Los Angeles.

The surgery will be exploratory, and Kemp's rehab time will depend on just how much work needs to be done. If the surgery is just a clean-up procedure, Kemp will be out four to six weeks per Steve Dilbeck of the Los Angeles Times, and up to four months if a repair is needed.

Kemp suffered injuries when he crashed into the center field wall at Coors Field in Denver on Aug. 28. He had a right knee contusion, had to have x-rays taken on his sore jaw (they were negative), and a later MRI revealed inflammation and a frayed labrum in the left shoulder. Kemp had a cortisone shot when the Dodgers were in San Francisco and missed two games against the Giants on Sept. 8-9.

Kemp hit just .159/.216/.286 in his first 20 games after hitting the wall, though he appeared to rebound last week. Kemp hit four home runs and three doubles in a five-game span, the first five games of a six-game winning streak for the Dodgers. But Kemp ended his season 0-for-6 with five strikeouts in his final two games.

"We know Matt's banged up," manager Don Mattingly said on Saturday, when Kemp hit two home runs. "Banged up doesn't mean that every swing you take hurts. You have trouble getting loose, you get stiff in the morning, you have stuff going on. It doesn't mean you can't play and still do some things."

His season began hotter than just about any Dodger ever, with 12 home runs in 23 games, as he hit .417/.490/.893 in the season's first month. But Kemp was sidelined for two weeks by a left hamstring strain in May, then sidelined again with a second left hamstring strain. In all, Kemp missed 51 of 53 games heading into the All-Star break.

Kemp hit .324/.373/.488, with five home runs in 42 games from the start of the second half until his run-in with the wall in Denver.

On the year, Kemp hit .303/.367/.538 with 23 home runs in 106 games, the third-most home runs by a Dodger in 110 games or less in one season.
