Alberto Castillo Released, Three Others Reassigned In Next Wave Of Dodgers Cuts

The rains came at Camelback Ranch in Glendale, but they quickly dissipated, as not even Mother Nature could keep Vin Scully from his appointed duty to call today's Dodgers game against the Angels.

Four players who aren't in uniform for today's contest are Alberto Castillo, Matt Chico, Will Savage, and Ryan Tucker, who were cut prior to today's game. The latter three were reassigned to minor league camp, while Castillo, 36, was released.

"People are looking for lefties. We didn't see him as that guy for us and we didn't see him being that guy in Triple A waiting around either," manager Don Mattingly said of Castillo. "We felt it was fair to him to get him out on the wire, let people take a look and give him the best chance to be in the big leagues with somebody."

Major league camp is down to 49, though that number will get smaller as more cuts will come after today's game. Minor league games began today, and many of the minor league coaches who had been in major league camp are now on the minor league side, and it becomes simply a numbers of game of not having enough coaches around in major league camp to properly instruct so many players, not to mention the fact that as major league regulars begin to play more there simply aren't enough at-bats or innings to go around for players with a small chance of making the team.

Matt Guerrier is feeling better today, having dealt with a back injury for roughly a week. He but in a regular workout day on Sunday and will throw off a mound Monday. Mattingly said if Guerrier continues to improve and experiences no setbacks he will likely pitch in a minor league game on Wednesday.

Jerry Hairston Jr. had a tight quad on Friday and though it has improved over the weekend he was sent home early on Saturday with the flu. Hairston was back in camp on Sunday, though he won't play today. He is expected to start at third base on Monday.
