Dodgers Hold Pair Of Juans In Reserve Saturday Night

Juan Rivera sits on Saturday night.
Juan Rivera sits on Saturday night.

Saturday night's Dodgers lineup is lacking a pair of Juans, as both Juan Uribe and Juan Rivera are sitting out the third game of the series against the Padres at Petco Park in San Diego.

Manager Don Mattingly said he planned to give both Uribe, 32, and Rivera, 33, a day off during this opening series. With the right-handed Dustin Moseley starting Saturday and the left-handed Clayton Richard starting Sunday, the decision was easy.

"With the lefty tomorrow, I wanted both of those guys in the lineup," Mattingly said.

Uribe is 0-for-7 with three strikeouts and a walk through two games, and is coming off one of the worst offensive seasons in Dodgers history (.204/.264/.293 with four home runs in 77 games last year), but don't look for any permanent lineup changes anytime soon.

"Juan's going to be streaky. I'm not going to let two games determine how we use this guy," Mattingly said. "Juan's going to get his at-bats. I don't really have anyone who could play every day over there, and I think he's our best defensive guy over there."

The left-handed hitting Adam Kennedy is starting at third base in place of Uribe tonight, while Tony Gwynn Jr. starts in left field in place of Rivera, who started the year with a pair of two-hit games.

"Juan is one of those guys you would pretty much like him in there every day, but I noticed last year when I kept banging him and banging him, he'd get tired and it would cost him," Mattingly said. "You could tell it wore him down a little bit."

Mattingly said he wants to keep his reserves fresh with the occasional start. Mark Ellis might get an off day on Sunday, but with no game Monday Mattingly might let Ellis play all four games in San Diego. "We'll see how tonight goes," Mattingly said.

  • Clayton Kershaw, looking much better than he did two days ago, threw his scheduled bullpen session on Saturday, and remains in line to start the home opener on Tuesday against the Pittsburgh Pirates. "He's still moving, he's smiling, and he's actually walking, so that's a good sign," Mattingly joked.
  • One day after, Chad Billingsley's performance remained at the front of many minds on Saturday, including Mattingly.

"I don't care who you are. That's about as good as it gets. He went from the beginning almost to the very end, where he was just dirty, all night," Mattingly said.. "He had everything working, and that's got to be a confidence booster for him."
  • The Padres will wear their new blue alternate uniforms for the first time tonight. The uniforms will be regularly worn for Saturday home games, and feature white piping around the neck and down the front of the jersey, and "SD" on the chest.
