Dodgers links: Joe Garagiola retires, backup outfielders, roster & stats projections

A look around for some Dodgers-related news:

• Tyler Emerick at MLB.com caught up with newly acquired utility man Skip Schumaker, who figures to play second base and all three outfield positions for the Dodgers this season.
• Given the lack of a right-handed reserve outfielder or corner man with some pop, Mike Petriello is hoping for Alex Castellanos to make the Dodgers at Mike Scioscia's Tragic Illness.
• In case you missed it, Albuquerque Isotopes beat writer Chris Jackson projected the rosters for both Double-A Chattanooga and Triple-A Albuquerque at MSTI.
• Mark Saxon at ESPN Los Angeles had a series of posts recently comparing the projections from Bill James, Dan Szymborski's ZiPS, and from scouts, including Clayton Kershaw, Matt Kemp, Hanley Ramirez, and Zack Greinke.
• Legendary broadcaster Joe Garagiola, who called the 1988 World Series alongside Vin Scully for NBC, retired earlier this week at age 87. Jim McLennan at AZ Snake Pit wrote a tribute to Garagiola, and recapped Garagiola's speech from his retirement ceremony as well.
• Pat Jordan, a longtime sportswriter and a former pitcher in the Braves system, wrote — a lot — about his experiences in spring training for SB Nation.
• Not really Dodgers related, but Royals manager Ned Yost wins the tough guy award. Yost had his gallbladder removed Tuesday night, then returned to work on Wednesday, as David Brown at Yahoo! Sports chronicled.
• Though not raining like on Wednesday, it was still quite a brisk morning here in Arizona. Over in north Scottsdale, Diamondbacks broadcaster Steve Berthiaume tweeted a picture from Thursday morning at Salt River Fields at Talking Stick. I hope the salt helps clear the snow out of the way:
