Matt Kemp returns to starting lineup for Dodgers

Kemp, in his first game of the spring, is batting third as the designated hitter against the Padres at Camelback Ranch.

USA TODAY Sports

Matt Kemp will make his spring training debut on Friday as the Dodgers take on the Padres in a split squad game at Camelback Ranch. Kemp, recovering from shoulder surgery in October, was held out of the first week of games while continuing to rehab. Manager Don Mattingly said on Thursday that he wouldn't put Kemp into a game until he saw how he felt on Friday morning.

Apparently Kemp feels just fine, which suits Mattingly.

"It would be a good day. If Matt could go tomorrow, that would be great," Mattingly said Thursday.

Kemp is the designated hitter for the Dodgers against the Padres, and batting third. It likely won't be long until Kemp will be able to play the field.

"Once (Matt) gets ready to go, he's going to be able to play the field," Mattingly said.
