2013 Dodger player profile: Tim Federowicz, solidly at number two

On a team filled with veterans, rookie Tim Federowicz has the inside track to be the backup catcher

USA TODAY Sports

Tim Federowicz has been positioned for the backup role since spring training started and with only one viable other candidate in camp, non-roster invitee, Jesus Flores, it does appear that Federowicz will be heading to LA to stay when camp closes in Glendale next week.

It will be interesting to see how Mattingly handles Ellis with all the off days in the early part of the season but given how much Federowicz has played (nearly equal to Ellis this spring), perhaps we may see Federowicz play at least twice a week.

Trivia

Federowicz joins Roy Campanella, Mike Piazza, Mike Scioscia and Jack Fimple, who are among the 11 Dodger catchers who hail from Pennsylvania.

Contract Status

Dodgers renewed Federowicz's contract for $491,000, that amount will change if Federowicz gets optioned during the season.

2013 Outlook

Federowicz will be the backup catcher and Mattingly wants to give A.J. more rest this season so I think Federowicz could get 45+ starts, hitting .235/.310/.355
