World Baseball Classic: Javy Guerra ruled inelgible to pitch for Team Mexico

The Dodgers beat Team Mexico in an exhibition on Wednesday at Camelback Ranch, and afterward regained a player to major league camp. But it was under unfortunate circumstances as Javy Guerra was deemed ineligible for the World Baseball Classic because of his offseason surgery.

Guerra had shoulder surgery on Nov. 2 and though fully recovered and pitching with no restrictions, he was deemed ineligible to pitch for Team Mexico per WBC rules.

The news that Guerra was off the team came just as suddenly as he was added, as he was named to Team Mexico on Sunday as a replacement for David Hernandez, who himself was deemed ineligible because his parents and grandparents were not born in Mexico. One would hope whomever is selected to replace Guerra will be thoroughly vetted before getting their hopes up.

"Sometimes God's plans aren't easily understood. Won't be playing in the WBC tomorrow (not my decision)," Guerra posted on Instagram Wednesday. "Going back to the Dodgers spring training. #HE has a plan bigger than I'll ever understand. Big shout out to the boys in Green and let's take care of business."

Guerra will return to the Dodgers on a technicality, with whom he will be able to pitch without restriction.

Mexico begins WBC play on Thursday afternoon with a Pool D matchup against Italy at Salt River Fields at Talking Stick.
