Zack Greinke makes his second start for the Dodgers on Thursday night in the series finale for the Dodgers against the Padres at Petco Park in San Diego. Greinke pitched scoreless ball into the seventh inning in his first start and allowed just two hits while striking out six.
Manager Don Mattingly was impressed.
"I've seen him enough that it's pretty much normal for Zach to be spotting up, hitting corners. Basically he can put the ball where he wants to," Mattingly said. "When he's on his 'A' game, when he's missing he's barely missing. Zack has great touch with the baseball."
The last pitcher to allow no runs in his first two starts as a Dodger was Kazhuisa Ishii, who turned the trick in 2002.
Greinke retired 14 straight batters and 19 of 21 overall for game for his first win.
Notes
- There are only two San Diego batters who have faced Greinke in more than three plate appearances in their career. Mark Kotsay is 3-for-10 (.300/.364/.400) against Greinke and Carlos Quentin is hitting .250 (6-for-24) with three home runs, but Quentin has been sidelined by a sore right wrist since getting hit by a pitch on Tuesday night. But Quentin is back in the lineup Thursday night.
- Several Dodgers are familiar with Padres starer Jason Marquis, some good (Adrian Gonzalez 6-for-21 with six walks, .286/.429/.429) and some bad (Andre Ethier 3-for-25; Matt Kemp 2-for-17). Juan Uribe is hitting .286 (6-for-21) with two home runs against Marquis, but he sits in favor of Luis Cruz at third base Wednesday night.
- The Dodgers look to even their all-time record at Petco Park with a win on Thursday. The Dodgers are 41-42 all-time at the stadium, which opened in 2004, and are 13-7 in San Diego since the beginning of the 2011 season.
- On Saturday at 1 p.m. PT on MLB Network, Don Newcombe will join '42' actors Chadwick Boseman and Harrison Ford on Studio 42 with Bob Costas, to discuss the film and Jackie Robinson. The episode will re-air on Sunday night at 7 p.m. PT.
