Dodgers-Padres brawl: Zack Greinke leaves game after collision with Carlos Quentin

Greinke has hit Quentin with three pitches in 31 career plate appearances, which also include three home runs allowed.

A funny thing happened on the way to Zack Greinke going for his second win. Up 2-1 in the sixth inning Thursday night, Greinke hit Carlos Quentin with a pitch, then Quentin charged the mound and started a bench clearing brawl between the Dodgers and Padres at Petco Park.

The melee resulted in at least three ejections, including Quentin and the overzealous Matt Kemp and Jerry Hairston Jr. of the Dodgers. Even worse, Greinke may have been hurt in the ensuing brawl.

Greinke took the brunt of Quentin's charge with his left shoulder, and left the game after getting examined by trainer Sue Falsone. It is unknown whether or not Greinke was ejected, though it seems unlikely given that he had no reason to purposely put the tying run on base to lead off the inning.

Quentin was understandably peeved, as he was also hit by a pitch in Tuesday's game, then missed Wednesday's contest with a sore wrist. But Quentin has a long history of crowding the plate, and getting hit by a pitch is nothing new to him. Since the start of the 2008 season Quentin has been hit 97 times, the most in baseball.

Chris Capuano entered in relief of Greinke in the sixth inning.
