Dodgers fighting to find relief

Dodgers relief pitchers have walked 19 hitters in 29⅔ innings this season. Dodgers starting pitchers have walked 16 hitters in 84⅔ innings.

It has been a rough week or so for the Dodgers bullpen, culminating in Monday night's loss to the Padres. The Dodgers had five relief pitchers combine for six walks, one strikeout, 38 balls, and 36 strikes in three innings, turning a 3-3 game into a 6-3 loss to San Diego.

"We get to 3-3 there and we get to our bullpen which we feel is our strength, then we walk the leadoff hitter," said manager Don Mattingly on Monday.

The Dodgers used 13 relief pitchers in three games in San Diego, then the group has collectively struggled in the four games since.

Those numbers don't include the four inherited runs allowed to score on Friday and Saturday in Arizona. Ronald Belisario, who didn't retire any of the three batters he faced on Monday and got stuck with the loss, was singled out by Mattingly.

"Beli for me has just been a little bit inconsistent. One outing he's really good, then the next outing he doesn't seem to be as good," Mattingly said. "His stuff seems to be good, but location seems to be off."

Chris Capuano, who retired eight of the 11 batters he faced in a pair of scoreless relief outings, gets the start for the Dodgers on Tuesday in place of Zack Greinke. In his career against the Padres, Capuano is 5-4 with a 3.34 ERA, including 1-2 with a 3.13 ERA in four starts in 2012.

Yonder Alonso is hitting .455 (5-for-11) with a double against Capuano, while normal lefty masher Chris Denorfia is hitting just .214 (3-for-14) against him. None of the current active Padres have hit a home run against Capuano, but Chase Headley, who will likely be activated from the disabled list this week, has hit .400 (4-for-10) with a home run, a double, and four walks against Capuano.
