After a pair of five-inning outings from their starters in the first two games at Citi Field, the Dodgers likely need an extended outing from Hyun-jin Ryu in their finale against the Mets on getaway day in New York.
Through 13 games the Dodgers had a major league-leading 11 quality starts and their starters had a 2.34 ERA. Since then the club has had seven starts but none of them quality and the results have been telling:
Games | Dec | Team Rec | QS | IP/GS | HR | BB% | K% | ERA | WHIP | FIP |
First 13 games | 6-4 | 7-6 | 11 | 6.51 | 6 | 4.92% | 24.00% | 2.34 | 0.992 | 2.81 |
Last seven games | 0-3 | 2-5 | 0 | 4.81 | 8 | 11.18% | 19.25% | 6.95 | 1.842 | 5.92 |
Ted Lilly pitched magnificently on Wednesday, allowing just one run while striking out seven, but did just last the five innings. With Lilly and Stephen Fife starting at least one more time through the rotation, it's important for Ryu and Josh Beckett to continue to average over six innings per start, and for Clayton Kershaw to average seven, just to take the load off of the bullpen.
