Stephen Fife placed on DL, Dodgers recall Matt Magill

Fife has right shoulder bursitis and is on the disabled list retroactive to Apr. 22. Magill, who was added to the 40-man roster in November, will make his major league debut on Saturday night against the Brewers.

The Dodgers have had so many pitchers get hurt this season, the replacements for injured pitchers are starting to feel the pain. Stephen Fife, who was scheduled to start Saturday night against the Brewers, was placed on the 15-day disabled list with right shoulder bursitis. Matt Magill was recalled from Triple-A Albuquerque and will make his major league debut in place of Fife.

Fife was recalled from Triple-A on Sunday in Baltimore to replace the injured Chad Billingsley, and allowed four runs in 4⅔ innings.

Magill had a 2.84 ERA in four starts with the Isotopes with 23 strikeouts in 19 innings, but he also has 14 walks. Magill was pulled early from his start in Triple-A on Monday after just 71 pitches in anticipation of a possible move.

Magill will be the ninth starting pitcher used by the Dodgers this season, in just their 23rd game. It matches the total number of starters used by the team in 2012. Of the 21 pitchers currently on the 40-man roster, after Saturday 17 will have pitched for the Dodgers this season, with only Scott Elbert (on the disabled list), Steve Ames, Javy Guerra, and Chris Withrow yet to do so.

Magill will wear number 36 for the Dodgers.
