Manager Don Mattingly told reporters on Tuesday he would be careful with Carl Crawford's tight right hamstring, so it's no surprise that the Dodgers left fielder is held out of the starting lineup against the Rockies on Wednesday, the second straight game Crawford is sidelined.
Resting Crawford Wednesday, coupled with Thursday's off day, gives the left fielder three full days of rest heading into the weekend series against the Giants in San Francisco. It also likely means that the Dodgers will be playing two position players short in the series finale against Colorado, as Mark Ellis is out for a fifth straight game with his strained right quad, though he has yet to be placed on the disabled list.
Nick Punto gets a turn batting leadoff on Wednesday, playing second base. Hanley Ramirez, in his second game back, bats second with Ellis out.
Troy Tulowitzki is back for the Rockies after missing two games with a strained left rotator cuff.
