Dodgers vs. Braves: Jason Heyward activated from DL, Luis Cruz starts at 3B

Heyward in his career has hit .111/.188/.139 (8-for-72) in 20 games against the Dodgers.

Daniel Shirey-US PRESSWIRE

The Dodgers will face a fortified Braves team on Friday night at Turner Field, as right fielder Jason Heyward was activated from the disabled list before the series opener. Heyward had an emergency appendectomy on Apr. 20.

The Dodgers also have a change in right field on Friday, as Andre Ethier gets a day off against the left-hander Paul Maholm. Scott Van Slyke starts in right field, his third start since getting recalled last week.

Luis Cruz is back in the lineup at third base, his first start since May 5. The Dodgers have played 13 games in May, and Cruz prior to Friday played in seven of them, with 13 total plate appearances. He is 1-for-13 this month and hitting just .087 (6-for-69) on the season. Cruz last season went 6-for-11 (.545) with two home runs in three games at Turner Field against Atlanta from Aug. 17-19.

The Braves placed Jordan Walden on the 15-day disabled list with right shoulder inflammation to make room for Heyward, who is batting second and playing right field for Atlanta on Friday night against Dodgers starter Hyun-jin Ryu. Heyward got off to a struggling start this season, hitting .121/.261/.259 (7-for-58) in 17 games.
