Dodgers 5/25/13 minor league report - Matt Magill shines in return to AAA

Matt Magill allowed just 2 hits over 6 shutout innings on Saturday and struck out 8 as the Isotopes beat Nashville

Thearon W. Henderson

Minor League Player of the DayMatt Magill (AAA) - 6 IP, 0 runs, 2 hits, 8 K's. Another strong performance for Magill who continues to rack up the K's in AAA. Over his last 3 outings for the Isotopes Matt has given up just 1 earned run and has fanned 22 batters in 16 innings.

AAA Matt Magill was excellent in his return to the Albuquerque rotation as he led the Isotopes to a 3 - 2 victory over the Sounds (Brewers). Magill allowed just 2 hits over 6 shutout innings, striking out 8 and walking 3. Chris Withrow and Josh Wall followed with a scoreless frame each, and while Steve Ames gave up a 2-run homer in the 9th he was still able to nail down his 5th save. At the plate Alex Castellanos' solo homer was the only extra base hit for the Topes, and the only multi-hit game belonged to Matt Angle who went 2 for 4 with a RBI.

AA – The Lookouts pitching staff held Pensacola to just 4 hits on Saturday as Chattanooga downed the Blue Wahoos (Reds) 3 to 1. Starter Andres Santiago turned in his first strong performance in a while as he allowed just 1 run on a solo homer and struck out 7 over 5.2 frames. His bullpen held the opposition hitless over the final 3.1 innings, including a perfect outing from the rehabbing Scott Elbert who recorded the win. Yasiel Puig drove in all 3 runs for the Lookout offense, two coming on what turned out to be the game winning single in the 8th and the other on a sac fly earlier in the contest. Joc Pederson doubled and stole his 14th base for the only other notable performance.

HiA – The Quakes with 4 homers to power their way to an 11 - 1 win over the Rawhide (Dbacks) on Saturday. Darnell Sweeney got things started early as his grand slam in the 2nd inning set the tone, and he had 5 RBI's in the game. Bobby Coyle and Pratt Maynard, who finished with 3 hits each, jacked solo bombs in the 3rd, then Noel Cuevas finished the scoring with a 3-run shot in the 7th. The one player who didn't really get in on the action was the rehabbing Jerry Hairston who went 0 for 2. On the mound starter Jarrett Martin had a fine performance because even though he allowed 10 base runner over 5 frames, he didn't give up any runs and struck out 8. Raydel Sanchez threw 3 innings in relief and permitted a run, then Owen Jones got the final 3 outs.

LoA – The Loons offense woes continued as they fell to the Dragons (Reds) 5 to 1 on Saturday. Robbie Garvey went 2 for 4 with a double and Tyler Ogle drove in the only run with one of his two singles, but that was about it for the offensive highlights. Other hitting notes are that Aaron Miller is hitless in 9 at bats since returning to Great Lakes, and Jesmuel Valentin's average has now slipped to .238. On the mound Carlos Frias allowed 6 hits and 2 runs over 5.1 innings, then Sawil Gonzalez let the game get away from him as gave up 3 more runs in his 2 innings of relief.

Coming up Blake Johnson takes the mound for the Isotopes on Sunday while Duke von Schamann will throw for the Quakes. Steve Smith will make his first start for Chattanooga and the Loons haven't announced their pitcher yet.

Minor League Transactions – AA/HiA: The Lookouts and Quakes swapped 1st baseman as Angelo Songco was promoted to Chattanooga while Chris Jacobs was sent back to Rancho.
