Matt Kemp removed in 9th inning as a precaution after HBP

After getting hit by a pitch in the elbow earlier in the game, Kemp felt a numbness in his fingers that disrupted his ability to throw. Both Kemp and manager Don Mattingly think the injury is minor.

For the second time in four days, Matt Kemp was replaced by Skip Schumaker in center field during the game. But on Tuesday against the Angels, the ninth inning move happened because Kemp felt numbness after he was hit by a pitch on his right elbow in the second inning.

"He came to me in like the seventh. He got hit on the elbow. Something was going on with his fingers, and he didn't feel like he could throw," manager Don Mattingly said. "He basically said, 'I don't want to screw this up. I can't really throw the ball, but I feel good swinging.'"

Both Mattingly and Kemp downplayed the injury. Mattingly said he expects Kemp to play on Wednesday and didn't expect Kemp to need an MRI, saying, "I hope it's nothing that gets to that."

Kemp, hitting fifth for the first time since 2010 on Tuesday, had his moments at the plate after the hit by pitch. In the fifth inning, he put a patented Kemp swing on a pitch from Joe Blanton and hit a towering drive to center field, but Mike Trout caught it at the wall.

Kemp turned on a ball in the sixth inning with a drive to left field and hustled to second base for a double. That snapped an 0-for-13 skid for Kemp, then A.J. Ellis followed with an RBI single to snap his own 0-for-16 skid, giving the Dodgers an insurance run.
