Matt Kemp placed on DL, Tim Federowicz recalled from Triple-A Albuquerque

Center fielder Joc Pederson is not in the starting lineup for Double-A Chattanooga on Thursday night.

The Dodgers on Thursday placed Matt Kemp on the disabled list with a strained right hamstring, as expected. But the corresponding move was anything but expected. The Dodgers recalled catcher Tim Federowicz from Triple-A Albuquerque prior to their finale against the Angels in Anaheim.

Kemp suffered the injury while running down a Mike Trout double in the seventh inning and had an MRI exam on Thursday.

It's unlikely that Federowicz up is the only move, given that the Dodgers still don't have a full-time center fielder on the roster. Skup Schumaker is a part-time center fielder, and Andre Ethier on Friday is making just his third appearance at the position in his career.

Ethier also started in center field on May 15, 2012, when Kemp was on the disabled list with a left hamstring strain. Ethier also started center field in the 2010 All-Star Game, which was played in Anaheim.

Joc Pederson, who played 44 games in center field for Double-A Chattanooga, is not in the starting lineup for the Lookouts on Thursday night. Yasiel Puig is playing center field for Chattanooga. Then again, don't get your hopes up.

Federowicz, who hit .418/.500/.848 in 21 games with Triple-A Albuquerque this season, starts at catcher for the Dodgers on Thursday. He hit .233/.410/.467 (7-for-30 with nine walks) in seven games since he was last optioned.

The Dodgers also activated Stephen Fife from the disabled list and optioned him to Triple-A Albuquerque. Fife pitched four innings in a rehab start on Tuesday for Class-A Rancho Cucamonga.
