In one of the most heated battles of the season, the Dodgers picked up perhaps their most satisfying victory in a disappointing season on Tuesday night. Tim Federowicz hit a three-run double in the eighth inning to give the Dodgers a 5-3 victory in a game that was marred by five hit-by-pitches and a very busy benches clearing brawl.
The double by Federowicz was just the second extra-base hit by the Dodgers all season with the bases loaded, and both have come in Zack Greinke's last two starts. Yasiel Puig, who hit a grand slam last Thursday, was in the middle of the brawl festivities on Tuesday, along with Greinke, again.
Puig was hit by a pitch in the face in the fifth inning, but stayed in the game after several minutes of conferring with trainers. Andre Ethier followed with his first home run since May 20, snapping a 71-plate-appearance streak without a long ball. That two-run home run erased an earlier two-run shot by Jason Kubel off Greinke to tie the game at 2-2.
Greinke, who only allowed two hits on the night, responded by hitting Miguel Montero in the back in the sixth inning, which prompted both benches to empty. Nothing much came of that, but in the seventh Greinke came to bat and was hit by Ian Kennedy high in the shoulder.
That's when things went crazy.
Kennedy and manager Kirk Gibson were ejected, as were Puig, who appeared to throw a punch, and hitting coach Mark McGwire. Arizona coach Turner Ward, who was bent over the railing by J.P. Howell, was also ejected.
Mattingly on Kennedy hitting Greinke: "I thought it was bullshit."

Suspensions and fines are sure to follow from this, but for now, the Dodgers got exactly what they needed: a win.
After the Dodgers got the lead in the eight, new closer Kenley Jansen retired the side in order in the ninth, including two strikeouts, for his third save. On the season, Jansen has 46 strikeouts and five unintentional walks in 33 innings.
