Minor League Player of the DayJonathan Garcia - 4 for 5, 2 HR's, 1 2B, 5 RBI's, 3 runs. Garcia has gone off as of late, crushing 13 of his 16 homers over the last 6 weeks. This reminds me of the steak that Joc Pederson had in the 2nd half of the 2012 season, and at 21 years old Jonathan is basically the same age as Joc.

AAA Chris Capuano looked good to go in his rehab start as the Isotopes downed the Redbirds (Cardinals) 7 to 2. Capuano allowed just 1 hit over 4 scoreless frames, striking out 5 and walking a pair. Matt Magill tossed the final 5 frames in relief, and while he also gave up just 1 hit, his control problems continued as he walked 4 and permitted 2 runs to score. At the dish Tony Gwynn had his second 4 hit game in 3 days as he recorded 3 singles and a triple, however he drove in just 1 run on the day. Nick Buss plated 3 with a single and a 2-run homer, while Dee Gordon went 3 for 5 with a triple and his 19 stolen base of the season.

AA – Chris Reed tossed a gem on Friday as the Lookouts shot down the Stars (Brewers) 4 to 1. Reed lasted a season high 8 innings in route to his 3rd win of the year, allowing just 1 run on 4 hits while striking out 4. Yimi Garcia got the final 3 outs to record his 12th save of the year, punching out 2 in the process. On offense Joc Pederson had his first big game in a while as he went 2 for 4 with a double and finally connected on his 9th homer of the year. Griff Erickson also homered, although his batting average is still below the Mendoza line, and Sean Burroughs doubled in a run.

HiA – The Quakes broke out the big sticks on Friday as Rancho defeated the Ports (A's) 13 to 2. The big news was that Jonathan Garcia homered twice, which helped him reach a tie for the California League lead in bombs at 16. Garcia also doubled, and finished the night 4 for 5 with 5 RBI's. Chris Jacobs was outstanding at the plate as well as he went a perfect 4 for 4 with 3 doubles and 2 RBI's. Both Noel Cuevas and Scott Schebler went 3 for 4, with Cuevas recording a triple and Schebler crushing his 8th jack of the year. On the mound Jarrett Martin conditioned his torrid pace of striking out more than a batter per inning as he K'ed 8 over 5 frames, and he also picked up the win by allowing 2 runs on 4 hits. Four different relievers finished off this contest, including a bounce back inning from Jon Michael Redding who punched out 2 of the 4 batters he faced.

LoA – Both Lake County and Great Lakes were held scoreless through 10 frames on Friday, but the Loons finally plated a run in the top of the 11th to come away with a 1 - 0 victory over the Captains (Indians). The Loons, who had just 5 hits (all singles) in this game, scored the winning run on a past ball after James Baldwin walked to start the inning and eventually moved to 3rd on a pair of ground outs. Nobody had more than one base knock in this one except for Robbie Garvey who went 2 for 6. On the mound 18 year old Miguel Sulbaran allowed just 3 hits over 6 scoreless innings, striking out 5 and walking 2. A quartet of relievers held the opposition scoreless over the final 5 frames, with Alan Garcia recording the win and Craig Stem picking up his 3rd save of the season.

DSL – The Dominican Dodgers scored 4 runs in the first two innings then held on for a 6 - 4 win over the Mariners. Nelson Palmer went 3 for 4 to get his average to an even .500, while Jose Luis Javier had a single and a triple while driving in one. 18 year old left hander Welington Serrano allowed just 2 hits and an unearned run over 5 frames to lower his season ERA to 0.64, then Luis Jimenez was perfect over the next two innings. Franklin Perez struggled in relief, but Elou Jean got out of a late jam and stepped up to record his 3rd save of the year.

Coming up – There will be 6 games on Saturday as the Loons will play a double header, with Arismendy Ozoria starting one of the games. Rob Rasmussen will take the mound for the Lookouts, while the rest of the pitchers are still TBD.

Minor League Transactions – AAA: Osvaldo Martinez was on the move again as he was sent back down to Chattanooga. AA: Pedro Guerrero's stay with the Lookouts was short as he has been sent back to Rancho. HiA: The Quakes made quite a few moves on Friday. Catcher Pratt Maynard, pitcher James Campbell, and outfielder Devin Shines were all placed on the DL. To take their spots on the roster pitcher Carlos Frias was promoted from LoA, catcher John Cannon was assigned to the team, and the aforementioned Guerrero re-joined the club. LoA: Brandon Martinez finally makes an appearance in 2013 as he has been assigned to the Loons roster.
