Dodgers 6/17/13 minor league report - Lookouts lean on pitching for win

Ross Stripling had an excellent start in the Lookouts win while his 3 relievers were perfect over the final 3 frames

Minor League Player of the DayRoss Stripling (AA) - 6 IP, 3 hits, 0 earned runs, 5 K's. After finding his way into the back end of many top 10 Dodger prospect lists this off-season, Stripling has been better than advertised and has continued his success in AA. In 6 starts for the Lookouts Ross has allowed more than 2 runs just once, and is striking out exactly a batter per inning.

AAA – The Isotopes completed their 4-game sweep against Memphis (Cardinals) on Monday with a 4 - 3 victory. Albuquerque scored two in the first inning on a Nick Buss RBI single and a bases loaded walk from Brian Barden, then added another in the second on a Tony Gwynn sac fly. Buss doubled later in the game, Barden tripled, and Elian Herrera finished the night 2 for 4, but that was about it for the offensive highlights. On the mound Aaron Laffey put together his third quality start in a row as he allowed 3 runs on 4 hits over 6.2 frames, but he only struck out 2. Jose Dominguez took the mound next and as fbihop reported, "Dominguez was in the high 90s with his fastball (95-99 on most and hit 102 on one) but he couldn’t put it anywhere near the plate. He wasn’t locating his slider very well, but when he did, he absolutely froze the batters." Of the three batters he faced, Jose struck out 1 and walked 2. Kelvin De La Cruz tossed the final 2 frames and allowed just 1 hit to record his 3rd save of the year.

AA – The Chattanooga pitching staff was outstanding on Monday as they held the Stars (Brewers) to just 3 hits in the Lookouts 3 - 1 win. Most of the credit goes to starter Ross Stripling who allowed all 3 hits, but also lasted 6 frames and did not give up an earned run. Stripling struck out 5 and walked 2 on the way to his 3rd AA win of the year. Jharel Cotton, Michael Thomas, and Yimi Garcia all threw an inning each of relief, and all three were flawless as they closed out the game. Garcia was the one who recorded the save, his 13th of year while striking out a pair. At the plate Joc Pederson connected on his 10th homer of the year as he is starting to heat up again. Osvaldo Martinez went 2 for 4 with a double while Brian Cavazos-Galvez drove in the only other run with a single.

HiA – All star break

LoA – All star break

DSL – The Dominican Dodgers downed the Red Sox 7 to 3 on Monday. Jimy Perez had a big game at the dish as he went 2 for 4 with a triple, a homer, and 3 RBI's. Deivy Castillo had the only other notable performance on offense as he was a perfect 3 for 3 with a walk and a three-bagger of his own. Starter Hector Rodriguez allowed just 2 hits and a walk in his 3 innings of work, but all three of those runners eventually came around to score. Jairo Pacheco recorded the win with 2 perfect innings of relief, and the box score says that Elou Jean notched his 4th save of the year even though he started the 9th inning with a 4 run lead.

Coming up – With the Loons and Quakes on their all star breaks and the Lookouts having the day off, the Isotopes and Dominican Dodgers will be the only ones playing on Tuesday. Matt Palmer will be the one throwing for Albuquerque.

Minor League Transactions – AA: Griff Erickson was placed on the DL and Dashenko Ricardo has returned to the Lookouts.
