Matt Magill recalled from Triple-A; Dodgers place A.J. Ellis on DL

Catcher A.J. Ellis missed the last three games with a strained left oblique. His move to the disabled list is retroactive to May 30. The earliest he will be eligible to return to the Dodgers is June 14.

The Dodgers as expected have recalled Matt Magill from Triple-A Albuquerque to start Sunday's series finale against the Rockies at Coors Field in place of Hyun-jin Ryu, out with a left foot contusion.

To make room for Magill, starting catcher A.J. Ellis was placed on the 15-day disabled list with a strained left oblique. Ellis, in a 2-for-19 slump over his last seven games, missed the last three games with the injury. Ellis is tied for eighth in MLB with 41 starts at catcher and his ninth with 364 innings behind the plate. In 2012 he finished fourth in both categories.

Ellis is the 13th Dodger to be placed on the disabled list this season.

Ryu was hit by a comebacker off his left foot on Tuesday during his two-hit shutout of the Angels. The foot was heavily wrapped after the game, but x-rays later in the week were negative. Ryu threw a light bullpen session on Saturday to test the foot but was still sore.

Magill has already had one tour of duty with the Dodgers this season. He made his major league debut on Apr. 27 against the Brewers at Dodger Stadium, and was 0-0 with a 5.50 ERA in four starts, with 19 strikeouts and 13 walks in 18 innings. He allowed just two runs while pitching into the seventh inning in his debut and struck out a season-high eight in Atlanta on May 19, but both were no decisions.

Magill was optioned to Triple-A Albuquerque on May 20 when Ted Lilly returned from the disabled list. In his one start back with the Isotopes, he pitched six scoreless innings with eight strikeouts, and picked up his first win of the season after eight no-decisions between the majors and minors.

After that May 25 start, Magill was slated to pitch again on Thursday but was skipped in preparation of possibly being needed on Sunday.
