Minor League Player of the Day: Hector Rodriguez pitched four scoreless innings for the Dominican Dodgers and did not allow a single hit..
Triple-A: All eyes were on rehabbing Dodgers Matt Kemp and Scott Van Slyke, but they combined to go 0-for-9 with eight strikeouts in the Isotopes' 9-5 loss to Round Rock (Rangers) in Albuquerque. Dee Gordon went 4-for-5 with a stolen base and two runs driven in, though he was also thrown out trying to steal home on the front end of a double steal with Kemp. Hard-throwing Jose Dominguez pitched in relief and retired both batters he faced, including one by strikeout. So far in six Triple-A appearances, Dominguez has allowed one hit, no runs and four walks in 5⅓ innings, with eight strikeouts.
Double-A: The Lookouts were down 7-1 in the sixth inning as Duke von Schamann tasted his first bit of Double-A adversity, but Chattanooga rallied for an 11-8 victory over Tennessee (Cubs). After allowing just one run in his first two Double-A stars combined, von Schmann gave up four tallies in four innings on Saturday. The Lookouts had a pretty balanced attack with 11 runs on 11 hits. Sean Burroughs had two hits and drove in three runs, and Bobby Coyle had two hits with two RBI. Joc Pederson drove in three as well. Rafael Ynoa reached base four times and scored three times. Angelo Songo snapped an 0-for-14 slump with a double and two walks, and he scored three runs as well. Onelki Garcia struck out two in two innings of relief to pick up his first win as a professional.
High Class-A: The Quakes' bats were mostly quieted on Saturday in a 4-2 loss in Lancaster (Astros). A couple of bright spots for Rancho Cucamonga were outfielder Scott Schebler, who homered, and shortstop Darnell Sweeney, who reached base three times in the leadoff spot. Carlos Frias allowed three runs in five innings for the loss, and walked four while striking out only three.
Low Class-A: Tyler Ogle doubled home Robbie Garvey in the bottom of the ninth inning to give the Great Lake Loons a 2-1 victory over West Michigan (Tigers). Though he didn't get the win, Brandon Martinez had a solid start for Great Lakes, allowing just one run in 5⅓ innings, with five strikeouts and a walk. Corey Seager drove in the other run for the Loons with a single in the first inning.
Rookie (Ogden): The Raptors pounded out 12 hits to get their first win of the Pioneer League season, a 7-6 victory over Idaho Falls (Royals). Outfielder Hank Yates, the Dodgers' ninth-round pick in the 2013 draft, doubled twice and scored two runs for Ogden, while catcher Austin Cowen drove in three runs and had two hits of his own. Jose Agusto Diaz struck out three of the five batters he faced in relief for the win, and Sawil Gonzalez pitched a scoreless ninth for the save.
Rookie (Arizona): Dodgers 2012 fourth-round pick Justin Chigbogu homered and drove in two runs but the AZL Dodgers lost 4-3 to the AZL Indians, thanks to four runs in the ninth inning. Chigbogu had the only hit for the Dodgers, while James McDonald (2013 18th rounder) had three walks. Pablo Gonzalez pitched five scoreless innings in the start, but Wascar Teodo and Jhosue Bermudez combined to blow a 3-0 lead in the ninth.
Dominican Summer League: The Dominican Dodgers gave up two runs in the ninth inning for a 3-2 walk-off loss to the Dominican Rays. Right fielder Ariel Sandoval, whom the Dodgers signed for a reported $150,000 bonus in January, was 2-for-3 with a double and a walk. He also stole a base, was caught stealing once, and was picked off another time. He doesn't turn 18 until November. Hector Rodriguez, 18, pitched four scoreless, hitless innings in a no-decision, with two walks and three strikeouts.
Coming up: The highlight Sunday will be 16-year-old Julio Urias making his sixth start for Great Lakes, on six days rest. Ross Stripling starts for the Lookouts. Matt Palmer starts for Triple-A Albuquerque. Gustavo Gomez, who has 46 strikeouts and 14 walks in 41⅔ innings this season, starts for the Quakes. Victor Araujo starts for Ogden.
