Minor League Player of the Day – Chris Anderson (LoA) - 2 IP, 0 Runs, 1 Hit, 5 K's. The Dodgers 2013 1st round pick out of Jacksonville University was outstanding in his debut. You can read more about it here and also see highlights from his start.
AAA – The was another wild finish in Albuquerque on Tuesday, this one ending on a more traditional walk-off as the Isotopes defeated Round Rock (Rangers) 6 to 5. After falling behind early, the Topes tied the game in the bottom of the 8th on a two-run single by Brian Barden, who had homered earlier in the game. Unfortunately reliever Steve Ames gave the runs right back as he permitted a pair to score in the top of the 9th, but the Albuquerque offense wasn't finished yet. Matt Angle's second single of the game in the bottom of the 9th brought his team within one, then the newest member of the Isotopes, catcher Damaso Espino, clubbed a 2-run walk off double, which was in fact his 3rd two-bagger of the game. Going back to the start of the game Aaron Laffey got knocked around for 10 hits over 5.2 frames but allowed just 3 runs, while Josh Wall tossed 1.1 innings of hitless middle relief.
AA – Chris Reed threw 8 strong innings on Tuesday, but it wasn't enough as the Lookouts were baked by the Biscuits (Rays) 3 to 0. Reed allowed just 2 runs on 6 hits and whiffed 7, walking just one along the way. Onelki Garcia struck out the side in the 9th but also gave up a run. Chattanooga had a slow day at the plate as Blake Smith's double was the team's only extra base hit. Joc Pederson reached base 3 times on 2 walks and a single.
HiA – The Quake woes continued on Tuesday as their 8th straight loss came in the form of a 5 - 1 defeat to the 66ers (Angels). The lone offense highlight for Rancho was a solo homer from Jonathan Garcia, who collected his first extra base hit of the second half after a torrid start in June. Starter Garrett Gould allowed 8 hits and 4 runs over 5.1 frames, and opposing batters are now hitting .295 against him for the season. Pedro Baez gave up an unearned run over 1.2 innings, while Jarret Martin, who is getting some mid-season rest by having a start skipped, worked an inning of relief.
LoA – The Dodgers top two picks of the 2013 draft showed off on Tuesday in the Loons 10 - 1 win over the Silver Hawks (Dbacks). 1st rounder Chris Anderson started the game and was outstanding in his professional debut, striking out the first four hitters he faced and in total punching out 5 while allowing just a single in two innings. 2nd rounder Tom Windle didn't have as many strikeouts as he K'ed 2, but he was just as impressive over 2 hitless frames, permitting just one base runner on a walk. From there Geoff Brown and Owen Jones took over and got through the final 5 innings while giving up just one run. At the plate, Aaron Miller's 2-RBI double was the only hit that went for extra bases, although Corey Seager did drive in 3 with a couple of singles.
Rookie Ogden Game 1 – In a shortened contest due to the scheduled double header, the Raptors tied the game in the 6th, then recorded a 7 - 6 walk-off win in the 7th over the Chukars (Royals). Joey Curletta was the hero in this one as it was his single that gave Ogden the victory. Austin Cowen also had a big game as he went 3 for 4 with a double, while Alex Santana went 2 for 3 with a triple and a RBI. Starter Luis De Paula had a wild time in this game as he did not allow a hit, but walked 6 of the first 10 hitters he faced which got him pulled two batters into the 2nd inning. James Baune pitched two scoreless innings in his professional debut, while Jacob Rhame recorded his first win as a pro with a hitless frame.
Rookie Ogden Game 2 – The Raptors swept their double header with a 5 - 3 win over Idaho Falls (Royals) in the nightcap. Scott Barlow rebounded from a rough start last time out as he did not allow an earned run over 4 innings, striking out 5 along the way. 2013 25th round pick Kyle Hooper did give up a couple of runs in relief but recorded the win in his professional debut, then Sawil Gonzalez picked up the save. At the dish Kyle Farmer had a couple of doubles, while Gerson Nunez hit his second homer of the young season.
Rookie Arizona – After allowing the tying runs to score in the bottom of the 9th, the Arizona Dodgers responded with 4 in the top of the 10th to defeat the Reds 8 to 4. Jhosue Bermudez was the reliever that blew the save, but he was picked up by Josmar Cordero as his second double of the game resulted in the eventual game winning run. Jeremy Moore also doubled in a rehab appearance, but that was it for the extra base hits. Michael Ahmed and Josh Henderson both with 2 for 4. Going back to pitching, the only other notable performance was three shutout innings from Victor Arano, who also struck out 4.
DSL Game 1 – The Dominican Dodgers lost 5 - 4 to the Astros in the completion of a previously suspended game. The offense didn't have any extra base hits in this one, and the only multi-hit games belonged to Ariel Sandoval and Ibandel Isabel who both went 2 for 4. Five different pitchers threw in this one, but the only player worth noting is Kevin Guzman who struck out 5 over 3 scoreless frames.
DSL Game 2 – The Dominican Dodgers also lost in their regularly scheduled game with the Astros, this time falling 5 to 1. There was even less offense in this one as the Dodgers managed just 5 singles, with Jose Luis Javier recording the only RBI. Starter Miguel Urena struck out 6 over 4 frames and allowed just 1 run, but Elou Jean had a rough outing as he gave up 3 runs (2 earned) while recording just 1 out.
Coming up – The Isotopes have the day off on Wednesday, but everyone else will be in action including Andres Santiago and the Lookouts. Joel Lima will throw for the Quakes, Miguel Sulbaran is scheduled for the Loons, and Francisco Villa will take the mound for the Raptors.
