Matt Kemp out of starting lineup for Dodgers vs. Giants

Kemp, one night after getting activated from a 24-game disabled list stint with a strained right hamstring, is out of the starting lineup on Wednesday, as part of a planned day off.

USA TODAY Sports

The Dodgers go for their second sweep of the season* on Wednesday night against the Giants, but will do so without Matt Kemp. The center fielder is out of the starting lineup in the series finale against San Francisco just one day after getting activated from the disabled list.

Kemp was 1-for-4 in his return on Tuesday night and made a fantastic sprawling catch in center field for the final out of the game in the ninth inning. Coupled with his minor league rehab games with Triple-A Albuquerque, Kemp played four consecutive days, including the last three in center field.

Skip Schumaker starts for Kemp, batting eighth and in left field. Andre Ethier starts in center field, while Yasiel Puig starts in right. Schumaker in his career against Tim Lincecum has hit .280/.333/.440 (7-for-25) with a home run and a double, while Kemp is just 9-for-44 (.182/.250/.182) with 18 strikeouts against Lincecum.

But manager Don Mattingly said this was a scheduled day off for Kemp, and that nothing is wrong with Kemp physically, per Pedro Moura of the Orange County Register and Dylan Hernandez of the Los Angeles Times.

Welcome to the not so wonderful world of life directly after a hamstring injury. The Dodgers were similarly cautious with Hanley Ramirez, who started two games after returning from the disabled list, followed by a scheduled non-start, but even he had a setback. But after not starting for seven consecutive games Ramirez has started 10 of the last 11 games and during his eight-game hitting streak is hitting .467 (14-for-30) with four home runs.

That caution will likely be extended as well to Carl Crawford, who is currently shelved with a left hamstring strain and on Wednesday will miss his 23rd straight game.

*2-game Angels series at Dodger Stadium excluded.
