The Dodgers activated shortstop Hanley Ramirez from the disabled list prior to their game Tuesday night against the Padres at Dodger Stadium. To make room for Ramirez, the Dodgers placed Chris Capuano on the disabled list with a left shoulder latissimus strain.
Ramirez strained his left hamstring on May 3 in San Francisco, and missed 28 games. The Dodgers went 11-17 during that stretch.
Ramirez is batting cleanup for the Dodgers Tuesday night.
Ramirez played three games in four days with Class-A Rancho Cucamonga on a rehab assignment, and was 2-for-9 with a double, a walk and three runs batted in. He played two games at shortstop and one at designated hitter. Ramirez doubled in three at-bats and played six innings at shortstop on Monday night.
In just four games with the Dodgers this season, Ramirez is 5-for-11 (.455) with a home run and two doubles. Dodgers shortstops other than Ramirez this season (73 plate appearances each for Justin Sellers and Dee Gordon, 32 PA for Luis Cruz, and 29 PA for Nick Punto) combined to hit .165/.244/.231 with three home runs, a double and a triple.
The timing couldn't be better for Ramirez to return, as he is 9-for-10 with a double and a walk in his career against Padres starter Clayton Richard.
Capuano missed Monday's start as a precaution with tightness in his left triceps and had an MRI that showed the strain in his shoulder. The move is retroactive to May 30, meaning the earliest Capuano could return is June 14.
The move also means Stephen Fife, who started Monday, stays in the rotation for now.
