Dodgers can't find home plate in loss to Braves

The Dodgers have been held to two runs or less in 25 of 62 games this season, tied for third most such games in the majors.

The Dodgers once promising week ended with a thud on Sunday, as neither Matt Magill nor the Dodgers offense could find home plate in an 8-1 drubbing by the Braves.

Matt Magill, who walked nine and allowed four home runs last Sunday at Coors Field, didn't quite approach those numbers on Sunday but in many ways was worse. Magill walked six and allowed seven runs in just 3⅔ innings.

Magill became the first Dodger to walk at least six in two consecutive starts since Kaz Ishii from June 12-18, 2003.

In six starts, many of Magill's stats are indistinguishable from one another. In 27⅔ innings Magill has allowed 25 runs and 28 walks, with 26 strikeouts.

The Dodgers didn't do much against Mike Minor, as the Atlanta lefty allowed just one run in six innings, with six strikeouts. Their only run against him in the first inning when he loaded the bases with nobody out, but settled for just one.

Little did they know, that's all they would get.

  • Yasiel Puig went 3-for-4 with a double to become the first Dodger since at least 1916 (as far back as Baseball-Reference goes) with five multi-hit games in his first seven big league games. Puig is batting .464/.483/.964 on the season.
  • Puig also played the final two innings in center field, his first major league time at the position.
  • Skip Schumaker went 1-for-2 with a walk to extend his hitting streak to a career-high 15 games, the longest hitting streak by a Dodger this season.
  • Magill's short outing meant relief pitcher Ronald Belisario got to bat on Sunday, his fifth major league plate appearance and first since 2009. Belisario tapped back to the box and is now 0-for-5 in his career.
  • Ramon Hernandez played the final two innings at first base, his second game at the position this season.
