The Dodgers go for the sweep of the Diamondbacks on Wednesday night at Chase Field, looking for their 15th win in their last 18 games. But the Dodgers will do so without utility man Skip Schumaker, who had his two-game suspension upheld by MLB on Wednesday for his role in the June 11 brawl against Arizona at Dodger Stadium.
Schumaker was suspended for two games for what MLB termed as "aggressive actions" during the brawl. Thanks the glacier like pace of the MLB punishment system, Schumaker didn't even have his appeal heard until the beginning of July, a full three weeks after the incident.
In addition to Wednesday night's game, Schumaker will also miss the opener of the four-game series against the Rockies on Thursday at Dodger Stadium.
Schumaker started at second base on Tuesday night in Arizona, and went 2-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI in the 6-1 win over the Diamondbacks. On the season Schumaker is hitting ..254/.325/.298 in 72 games. He has started 22 games at second base, 11 in left field and eight in center field this season.
Schumaker has also pitched in two games this season, and on Tuesday switched numbers from No. 3 to No. 55, worn previously this year by Matt Guerrier and Ramon Hernandez. It is the number work by Orel Hershiser during his Dodger career, someone Schumaker grew up watching.
"I remember growing up watching Orel pitch, and I was on the same mound as Orel and that was pretty cool," Schumaker said back in April.
Schumaker wore number 55 during his eight seasons in St. Louis.
