The Dodgers will face the Reds on Friday night, trying to bounce back from the series-opening loss. Homer Bailey starts on the mound for Cincinnati, which usually means good news for Adrian Gonzalez.
The Dodgers' first baseman is 8-for-15 in his career against Bailey with five home runs and two doubles. The five home runs against Bailey are the most by Gonzalez against any pitcher. He has also hit four home runs against two pitchers though in many more PA: Matt Cain (74) and Livan Hernandez (41).
The only other player to hit more than two career home runs against Bailey is Seth Smith, with three home runs in 14 plate appearances.
Gonzalez homered in his first plate appearance as a Dodger in 2012, then went 115 plate appearances and a full 25 games without another long ball. Until the Dodgers were in Cincinnati on Sept. 23. Gonzalez homered twice in three at-bats against Bailey.
Not only has Gonzalez homered against Bailey five times in just 15 PA. Those home runs have all come in his last 10 PA against the right-hander, dating back to 2009. The other three home runs were hit when Gonzalez was with the Padres.
On Sept. 26, 2010:
On April 25, 2010:
And July 27, 2009:
That's at least one home run for Gonzalez in each of his last four games against Bailey. Will he continue the streak on Friday night?
