Yasiel Puig named National League Player of the Month for June

The Dodgers' 22-year-old outfielder was also named NL Rookie of the Month for his first month in Major League Baseball.

In June 2012 the Dodgers hit six home runs as a team in what was the worst offensive month since the franchise moved to Los Angeles in 1958. In June 2013 Yasiel Puig hit seven home runs all by himself and on Wednesday was named the National League Player of the Month.

Not bad for his first ever month in Major League Baseball.

Puig hit .436/.467/.713 in June, the highest average ever for anyone in his first month, per Elias. Puig's 44 hits in June were the second most ever for a player in his first month in Major League Baseball.

In June Puig led the majors in batting average, slugging percentage (minimum 75 plate appearances for both) and hits. He was second in the National League with 72 total bases and tied for third with 19 runs scored. Puig was first in the NL and second in MLB with a .503 wOBA, and led the majors with a 234 wRC+.

Despite being on the team for almost exactly a third of the season, Puig has the most three-hit games on the Dodgers, with eight. Puig is second on the team with eight home runs. Puig is second on the team with three outfield assists.

Before Puig, the Dodgers were 7-for-46 (.152) with the bases loaded, with no extra-base hits. In Puig's first at-bat with the bases loaded he homered.

Before Puig, the Dodgers had three home runs in two months with runners in scoring position. In Puig's first four at-bats with runners in scoring position, he homered three times.

Puig is just the fifth rookie ever to win both Rookie of the Month and Player of the Month, joining Dontrelle Willis (June 2003), Ryan Braun (July 2007), Jeremy Hellickson (July 2011) and Mike Trout (July 2012). Puig is the only rookie ever to win the Player of the Month award in his first month in the big leagues since the award began in 1958.

The last Dodger to win player of the month was Matt Kemp in April 2012.

The last Dodger to win rookie of the month was Dee Gordon in September 2011.
