The Dodgers on Tuesday finalized their signing of relief pitcher Brian Wilson to a one-year, major league deal. Jim Bowden of ESPN reported the contract at $1 million in base salary with performance bonuses, though it's yet unknown whether Wilson gets a flat $1 million for the remainder of the season or is he'll get a prorated share of $1 million, which with 62 days remaining is roughly $338,798.
The signing of Wilson puts the Dodgers' 40-man roster at 39 players.
Once Wilson joins the Dodgers after a stint in the minors, he will be the 221st player and 76th pitcher to play for both the Giants and Dodgers.
Here is some reaction to the Wilson deal:
- Asked how Wilson will fit into the Dodgers clubhouse, manager Don Matingly said, "We've got a few characters in there. I'm sure he'll fit right in," per Pedro Moura of the Orange County Register.
- Mike Petriello at Mike Scioscia's Tragic Illness liked the deal, reluctantly calling it "a pretty defensible move without a lot of downside as far as I can see."
- Chad Moriyama doesn't like the deal as much.
- Signing Wilson is "a no-risk deal on both sides, and if it works it could pay dividends for the Dodgers down the stretch," wrote Paul Swydan at FanGraphs.
- ""They got him. Good for Brian. He's throwing the ball well. He did a lot for the Giants," said Giants manager Bruce Bochy, per John Shea of the San Francisco Chronicle. "He went to a rival, though. I don’t know how well that’s going to go over with our fans."
- Wilson's former Giants teammates are happy for Wilson, writes Hank Schulman of the Chronicle.
- "I'm sticking with gross. This is your mom getting drunk and making out with Tommy Chong, but with more hair," wrote Grant Brisbee at McCovey Chronicles, unhappy with the former Giant's choice of new team. "If you want to take the analogy further, this move during this season is like your mom making out with Chong in the back of the court while you're getting arraigned for larceny. It's awful, unspeakably awful, and then you have to look in the back and see that?"
