The Dodgers didn't make a major league move on the day of the non-waiver trade deadline, with now-Isotopes catcher Drew Butera their only July 31 acquisition. But the team did improve the bench on Tuesday, adding some power by recalling Scott Van Slyke from Triple-A Albuquerque before their game against the Yankees at Dodger Stadium.
Utility man Elian Herrera was optioned back to the Isotopes. Herrera was 0-for-1 in his third stint with the Dodgers this season, and on the year he is 2-for-8 in four games.
Van Slyke was optioned to Triple-A on July 21 when Matt Kemp was activated from the disabled list, and couldn't have been recalled for 10 days without replacing someone getting placed on the DL. Once Kemp was placed on the disabled list again on July 24, the Dodgers opted to activate Ted Lilly rather than activate Van Slyke, even though they designated Lilly for assignment one day later.
Van Slyke is hitting .241/.309/.517 with six home runs and six doubles in 97 plate appearances for the Dodgers this season. This is his third stint with the big club this season. The outfielder and first baseman was 6-for-24 (.250/.441/.458) with two doubles, a home run and nine walks in eight games during his latest turn with Albuquerque.
