Minor League Player of the Day – Ross Stripling (AA) - wins his 6th game, pitches 6 innings and allows no runs, 1 hit, 2 walks and strikes out 5. After a rough July, Stripling has had a good August, 19.2 IP, 17 hits, 2 earned runs, and 15 strikeouts. 9 walks are the one blemish on his otherwise nice month.
AAA – The offensive woes continued for the Isotopes as they lost 5-1 to the Redhawks (Astros). Nick Buss and Eliezer Alfonzo each had 2 hits but that was the extent of the offense. Angel Castro pitched 6 innings, giving up 3 runs, 9 hits, 3 walks and 2 strikeouts. Javy Guerra had a rough 9th inning, allowing 2 runs, 2 hits, 2 walks and a strikeout.
AA – The Lookouts outscored the Smokies (Cubs) 6 to 4. Ross Stripling didn't allow much in his 6 innings of work, a hit and a couple of walks. Jarret Martin and Garrett Gould were roughed up a bit but Michael Thomas put out any embers in getting the save. J.T. Wise homered and Brian Cavazos-Galvez had 2 hits in 5 at-bats. Joc Pederson went 1 for 5. Jon Garcia singled to get his 6th hit this month but overall, Garcia's August has been brutal - .122/.173/.163 in 52 plate appearances.
HiA – The Quakes saved all of their offense for the bottom of the 9th as they rallied to score 4 runs and defeated the Storm (Padres) 4-3. Lindsey Caughel looked to be heading for a loss though he only gave up 1 earned run of the 3 runs tallied against him, Caughel also allowed 6 hits and a walk while striking out 7. Joel Lima pitched the 9th inning and got the win for his efforts. Unlike yesterday's offensive party, no Quake had more than one hit in the game but they got 3 of them in the 9th as O'Koyea Dickson singled in 2 and then with 2 out, Chris O'Brien and Scott Wingo singled home the tying and winning runs.
LoA – In a 10 inning game, the Loons dropped the opener of their home series against the Fort Wayne TinCaps (Padres) 4-3. Julio Urias started and had 3 scoreless innings, allowing just 2 hits and striking out 5. Geoff Brown allowed 2 runs in his 4 innings but Rob Rogers held the TinCaps in check. Owen Jones gave up 2 runs in the 10th to take the loss. Aaron Miller and Jeremy Rathjen were the key offensive stars, Miller went 2 for 5 with an RBI and Rathjen doubled and homered, going 2 for 4.
Rookie Ogden – The Raptors were no match for the Billings Mustangs (Reds) losing by a 10-2 score. Jose De Leon allowed 8 runs (7 earned) with 2 home runs amongst the 8 hits the Mustangs tallied in De Leon's 3.2 innings of work. Jesmuel Valentin had 2 hits in 5 at-bats, Jacob Scavuzzo homered and went 2 for 3. Pat Stover and Gerson Nunez each had 3 hits.
Rookie Arizona – The Arizona Dodgers gave up 2 runs in the bottom of the 7th and lost to Giants 5-4. Victor Gonzalez returned to the mound 3 weeks after his last appearance and this one could only be called slightly better, as Gonzalez had deuces wild everywhere, in his two-thirds of an inning appearance, Gonzalez allowed 2 runs, 2 hits, and 2 walks. But it was Edison Bock, the 19-year old Venezuelan, who allowed the two runs and took the loss. Bock has had control issues in his time with the Dodgers, and his 20 walks in 21 innings pitched in Arizona this summer continue that theme. Jaylen Harris had 2 hits and Tyger Pederson scored and drove in a run going 1 for 4.
DSL – Despite giving up 4 runs late, the Dominican Dodgers defeated the Athletics 5-4. Jairo Pacheco started and gave up no runs, a hit, 3 walks and 3 strikeouts in 4 IP. Roberth Fernandez followed with 3 more scoreless innings, striking out one and Fernandez picked up the win. Johan Mieses had two hits and Ibandel Isabel went 1 for 4.
Coming up – Full slate of games as the season begins the final few weeks, Duke von Schamann leads the Lookouts in their series opener against the Suns, Matt Palmer tries to right the ship for the Isotopes against the Redhawks, Freddie Cabrera will try to keep the momentum for the Quakes versus the Storm, Chris Anderson will look to build upon his best start of his career as the Loons go to game two of their series against the Tin Caps, and lefty Luis De Paula pitches for the home team Raptors against the Mustangs.
Minor League Transactions – AA: Chattanooga activated C Griff Erickson from the 7-day disabled list and placed C Jan Vasquez on the 7-day disabled list; LoA: Great Lakes sent 3B Paul Hoenecke on a rehab assignment to AZL Dodgers.
