Minor League Player of the Day – Red Patterson (AAA) - 6 IP, 0 Runs, 3 hits, 6 K's. Patterson has been used in a variety of roles for the Isotopes this season, starting 11 games and coming out of the bullpen 27 times. Overall he has thrown exactly 100 innings, and his 3.15 ERA is very impressive for someone playing in the Pacific Coast League. In fact, if he had just a few more innings under his belt, his ERA would qualify for 3rd best in the entire league.
AAA – The Isotopes used a big 2nd inning to propel themselves to a 9 - 5 win over the Sounds (Brewers). Albuquerque scored 6 times in their big frame, with three of the runs coming on a Justin Sellers triple and two more coming on a Scott Van Slyke double. Eliezer Alfonzo recorded 3 RBI's as well with a 3-run homer later in the game. On the mound Red Patterson was excellent as he allowed just 3 hits over 6 shutout innings. Blake Johnson got into trouble in the 7th and allowed 4 runs, but Kelvin De La Cruz came in to quiet things down and got the long save.
AA – Game canceled due to wet grounds
HiA – After playing a wild game on Wednesday, the Quakes won in a more traditional fashion against the Mavericks (Mariners) on Thursday by beating High Desert 4 to 2. Scott Schebler hit his league leading 27th homer in the victory, a 2-run shot, while Darnell Sweeney went 2 for 3 with a double and a RBI. Corey Seager was 0 for 3 with a walk. Starter Lindsey Caughel had a solid outing as he allowed just 1 earned run and struck out 8 over 6 frames. Once he left the game Daniel Coulombe was excellent out of the bullpen, tossing 3 hitless innings and recording the win.
LoA – Four Loon pitchers combined to shutout the Lugnuts (Blue Jays) 2 to 0 on Thursday. Starter Julio Urias threw 3 scoreless innings and struck out 4, allowing 2 hits and a walk. Geoff Brown followed with 4 impressive innings of 3-hit ball, then Ralston Cash and Owen Jones completed the shutout. The Great Lakes offense did not have an extra base hit in this game, and Aaron Miller had the only notable performance as he went 3 for 4 with a RBI.
Rookie Ogden – The Raptors traveled past the Voyagers with a 3 - 2 win on Thursday. Starter Victor Araujo, who had gotten rocked in his last two outings, rebounded very nicely as he allowed just 3 hits and 1 run over 6 innings. A trio of relievers finished off the victory, including Sawil Gonzalez who collected his 3rd save with a hitless 9th. At the dish Jacob Scavuzzo went 2 for 4 with a double and a RBI, but he was the only hitter in the lineup with an extra base hit and the only one with a multi-hit game.
Rookie Arizona – The Arizona Dodgers defeated the Mariners 4 to 1 on Thursday to move into a first place tie. The Dodgers, who already won their division in the first half of the season, were led by good pitching from a trio of international players signed over the past few years. Starter Victor Gonzalez, from Mexico, did not allow a hit or walk during his three innings of work, then Abdiel Velasquez, from Panama, gave up just 2 hits over the next 5 frames. Dominican born Wascar Teodo then finished things off with a scorless 9th, recording his 3rd save in the process. The offense was led by James McDonald who drove in 3 of the 4 runs with a 2-run homer and a sacrifice fly. David Reid-Foley had the only RBI with a 2 for 4 effort.
DSL – The Dominican Dodgers lost their third to last game of the season 5 - 1 to the Red Sox. Jose Luis Javier went 2 for 4 with at triple for the only offensive highlight. Starer Angel German allowed 3 runs in 4 innings to drop to 0 - 5 for the season, while Miguel Urena had some rare success in relief as he tossed 2 scoreless frames.
Coming up – 2013 1st round pick Chris Anderson will take the mound for the Loons on Friday, while Ross Stripling will throw for the Lookouts. Angel Castro gets the start for the start for the Isotopes, Gustavo Gomez gets the ball for the Quakes, and Jose De Leon toes the rubber for the Raptors.
