Dodgers 8/24/13 minor league report - home runs are all Joc hits

Isotopes, Lookouts and Loons win while Quakes and Raptors lose, Joc Pederson continues to hit home runs, Scott Van Slyke comes close to a cycle and Nick Buss goes 4 for 4

Minor League Player of the DayScott Van Slyke (AAA Albuquerque) - Van Slyke went 3 for 4, missing the home run for a cycle. He also scored 4 runs and drove in 3 runs.

AAA – The Isotopes hit their way to a 12-7 win over the Sounds (Brewers). Stephen Fife started but wasn't too impressive, while he got the win going the required 5 innings, he gave up 4 runs, 3 hits, 4 walks and struck out 3. Don Mattingly had said that the Dodgers are making sure Fife remains ready to start for the Dodgers if necessary. LHP Onelki Garcia gave up his first hits (4) in the PCL in his 6th Isotope appearance, he also gave up 2 runs and struck out 1 in an inning of work, Javy Guerra recorded his 10th save. As for the offense, aside from the aforementioned Van Slyke, Nick Buss went 4 for 4, all singles as he both scored and drove in 2 runs; Alex Castellanos hit a home run.

AA – Coming back from an early 2-run deficit, the Lookouts took the lead and held on to beat the Generals (Mariners) 7-4. Garrett Gould started but was soon out of the game, going 3.2 innings, allowing 6 hits, 3 runs, 3 walks and struck out 3. The next 3 pitchers, Andres Santiago, Pedro Baez and Yimi Garcia pitch a collective 5.1 innings, struck out 10, walked 3, scattered 5 hits and just allowed a single run. Angelo Songco and Osvaldo Martinez each got 2 hits, Joc Pederson hit his 21st home run of the year and Jon Garcia hit is first in AA.

HiA The Quakes got behind and then were never in this 10-2 loss to the JetHawks (Astros). Darnell Sweeney drove in 2 runs to tie the game but after that, the JetHawks rolled out 8 unanswered runs. Freddie Cabrera didn't care for Lancaster, allowing 10 hits, 3 walks and 8 runs in 3 innings of work. Joel Lima followed up with 3 innings but gave up only 2 more runs. Corey Seager went 0-3, walking once and striking out twice.

LoA After being tied after the bottom of the 2nd, the Loons Silver Hawks (Diamondbacks) saw the Loons score 7 more runs in their 9-4 win. Tom Windle picked up his 5th win, going 5 innings, allowing 9 hits, 3 runs, 1 walk and struck out 5. Windle could be tiring, his August line of 19.2 IP, 23 hits, 11 runs, 10 walks and 21 strikeouts, the 19.2 innings this month bring close to the 50 inning mark that has mentioned as his season limit, Windle also pitched 98 innings in college this year. Aaron Miller and Devon Shines each had 2 hits.

Rookie Ogden – The Raptors lost a tough 1-run game, 4-3, to the Mustangs (Reds). Luis De Paula gave up 4 runs, 6 hits, 2 walks and struck out 5. Jordan Hershiser struck out 3 in 2 innings. Gerson Nunez drove in 2 runs, Jesmuel Valentin and Alex Santana each had a double.

DSL – Suspended game, their season is now over.

Coming upJonathan Martinez starts for the Loons, while Chris Reed goes for the Lookouts. Matt Palmer is on the mound for the Isotopes, Jon Michael Redding gets the ball for the Quakes, and Scott Barlow toes the rubber for the Raptors.

Transactions - Rancho Cucamonga Quakes activated outfielder Bobby Coyle and placed LHP Geison Aguasviva on the 7-day disabled list.

Playoff chance status - (AAA) The Isotopes are 7 games back and their elimination number is 3 with 9 games left to go. (AA) The Lookouts will wait until next year. (HiA) The Quakes remain a half game ahead of the Storm for the last playoff spot. This could be critical for the Dodgers as they hope to have some minor league games available for Matt Kemp to play in September. (LoA) The Loons have a 2.5 game lead in the race for the last playoff spot. They also have a 1.5 game deficit for the second-half division championship. (Rookie-Pioneer) Ogden trails by 6 games with 15 games left in the season. (Rookie-Arizona) Dodgers had won the first-half division title and has to win one more game to clinch a bye. They play a single-elimination round playoffs, so it only lasts a few days.
