Dodgers 8/29/13 minor league report - Loons clinch playoff birth

After a horrible first half of the season, Great Lakes rebounded nicely in the second half of the season and clinched a playoff spot on Thursday

Minor League Player of the DayChris Anderson (LoA) - 4 IP, 1 Hit, 0 Runs, 4 K's.  Anderson lowered his season ERA to 1.96 with 4 scoreless innings, allowing just 1 hit and permitting opposing batters to hit just .196 against him.

AAA – The Isotopes doubled up on the Express (Rangers) 10 to 5. Justin Sellers drove in a team high 3 runs, going 2 for 4 with a triple and a homer.  Scott Van Slyke had 3 hits, as did Dee Gordon who fell a homer shy of the cycle.  On the mound Stephen Fife walked 5 over 4.1 innings, permitting 2 runs and striking out just 2.  Sean White got the win in relief after permitting a run over his 2.2 innings of work, while Blake Johnson was solid over the final 2 frames.

AA – The Lookouts miserable season continued as managed just 1 hit in a 5 - 0 loss to the Smokies (Cubs).  Leadoff man Jeremy Moore had the only base knock in the 4th inning, a single that ended up going nowhere.  Joc Pederson walked once and went 0 for 3 on the night.  Starter Ross Stripling threw well in the defeat, allowing just 5 hits and 2 runs in his 7 innings of work.  Michael Thomas had a rare rough outing as he allowed 3 runs in relief, while Yimi Garcia was excellent in his inning of work as he struck out all 3 batter he faced.

HiA – The Quakes got crushed in the late innings as Rancho fell to the Mavericks (Mariners) 14 to 3.  After Freddie Caberera allowed 1 earned run over 3 innings of work, Joel Lima permitted 5 runs to score and Blake Smith gave up 3 additional runs.  At the plate Darnell Sweeney went 3 for 4 with a triple and a RBI, while Casio Grider finished with a single, a double, and a run batted in.

LoA – The Loons clinched a playoff birth by defeating the Dragons (Reds) 3 to 0.  The Great Lakes offense didn't have any extra base hits in the win, and Devin Shines had the only multi-hit game as he went 2 for 4 with a RBI.  On the mound 2013 1st rounder Chris Anderson was excellent 12th start of the year, allowing just 1 hit over 4 shutout innings.  Brandon Martinez got the win in relief after tossing 3.2 scoreless frames, then later in the game Luis Meza recorded his 4th save of the season.

Rookie Ogden – The Raptors defeated the Owls (Angels) 5 to 3 on ThursdayAdam Law continued his torrid hot streak on offense as he lead Ogden with 3 hits and 3 runs scored.  Nobody else had more than one base hit, although  Alex Santanta drove in two of the other runs.  On the mound Luis De Paula struck out 7 over 6 frames, allowing 3 runs along the way.  Michael Johnson was perfect over the next two innings, then Sawil Gonzalez recorded his 5th save with a hitless 9th.

Coming upTom Windle highlights the action on Friday as he throws for the Loons, while Garrett Gould isn't far behind while taking the mound for the Lookouts.  Angel Castro will be on the bump for the Isotopes, and Scott Barlow will throw for the Raptors.
