1988 Dodgers Week 18 review: Kirk Gibson joins 20-20 club

Kirk Gibson this week became the fifth Dodger ever with 20 home runs and 20 stolen bases in the same season, but the club lost four of six games to cut into their shrinking lead in the NL West.

The Dodgers blew a pair of eighth-inning leads against the Reds at home, then lost two of their first three games in Houston. The 2-4 week saw their 4½-game advantage in the National League West shrink to just 2½ games over the Astros.

The team is just 9-11 since their five-game sweep at Wrigley Field, back when the division lead was at the high point of the season at seven games.

Dodger Batter of the Week: In a down week for the offense, Kirk Gibson was the shining star. He his .391 (9-for-23) with two home runs and two doubles, and also stole three bases. The Dodgers only scored 20 runs in six games, and Gibson had seven runs scored and six driven in.

Gibson on the season has 21 home runs and 20 stolen bases (he has been caught just three times), making him just the fifth Dodger to reach the 20-20 club, and the first since Pedro Guerrero in 1983. He is on pace for 31 home runs and 30 stolen bases, which would make him the first Dodger ever to reach 30-30.

Dodger Pitcher of the Week: Tim Leary continued his comeback season. He was 1-1 on the week but his win was a shutout of the Reds on Tuesday, his fifth of the season, and he lowered his ERA to a team-leading 2.32, second in the National League to David Cone (2.31) of the Mets.
