The Dodgers try to salvage a split on Sunday against the Giants, trying to avoid a second series loss in their last 12 home series. But the Dodgers are without another few starters, as Carl Crawford and Yasiel Puig are out of the starting lineup on Sunday.
Crawford has been nursing a sore back for some time and left Saturday night's game in the third inning. Puig left in the fifth inning, after getting hit by a pitch in the shoulder and also landing on his groin area during a diving catch. Manager Don Mattingly said after Saturday's game that the way Puig plays he has a lot of bumps and bruises.
Crawford and Puig join Hanley Ramirez (irritated nerve in his back) and Andre Ethier (ankle) among the Dodgers infirmary, also out this weekend. It is unknown whether or not Puig or Crawford will be available to pinch hit on Sunday.
Nick Buss gets his first major league start, in right field and batting eighth. Dee Gordon gets his first start since making three errors against the Rays on Aug. 11.
The Dodgers will see another member of the M*A*S*H unit in Phoenix in Matt Kemp when they open up a four-game series against the Diamondbacks on Monday. It is not yet known when Kemp will be activated from the disabled list but the outfielder, who last played for the Dodgers on July 21, is rehabbing at Camelback Ranch in Glendale, Arizona.
