In a week that nearly ended with the division winner being crowned, nothing too exciting happened. Two teams tried to disrupt other playoff races, while one is hanging on to the National League West race by a thread. Now let's take a look what happened around the division this week...
TEAM RECAPS:
Diamondbacks: Arizona was 4-2 this week. The Diamondbacks dropped their first game against the Rockies before winning the final two games of the series. Arizona then hosted Los Angeles and won two of three games.
Rockies: Colorado was 2-4 this week. The Rockies won their first game last week over the Diamondbacks before dropping the final two games of the series. Colorado then won its first game against St. Louis before dropping its last two.
Giants: San Francisco was 4-2 this week. The Giants lost their first game of the week to the Dodgers before taking the final three of the four game series. San Francisco then traveled to New York where it split two games with the Mets
Padres: San Diego was 5-2 this week. The Padres started off the week by splitting a four game series with the Braves on the road. San Diego then traveled to Pittsburgh where it beat the Pirates in three straight games.
Dodgers: Los Angeles was 2-5 this week. The Dodgers won their first game over the Giants before dropping three straight. LA then traveled to Arizona where it lost two of three against the Diamondbacks.
WHAT'S IN STORE FOR THESE TEAMS NEXT WEEK:
Diamondbacks: One game against the Dodgers, three games against the Rockies, three games against the Padres
Rockies: One game against the Cardinals, three games against the Diamondbacks, day off, two games against the Red Sox
Giants: One game against the Mets, three games against the Yankees, day off, two games against the Dodgers
Padres: One game against the Pirates, three games against the Dodgers, three games against the Diamondbacks
Dodgers: One game against the Diamondbacks, three games against the Padres, day off, two games against the Giants
OVERALL PLAYER OF THE WEEK:
Giants' outfielder Hunter Pence. In six games, Pence tore the cover off the ball. He hit .375 with 5 homers and 13 RBI. Pence also scored eight runs, walked three times, and struck out five times. In four games against the Dodgers, the outfielder hit five homers and had 12 RBI.
BEST INDIVIDUAL PERFORMANCE OF THE WEEK:
Padres' starting pitcher Andrew Cashner. On Monday Sept. 16 against the Pirates, Cashner was brilliant. The righty threw a complete game shutout. Cashner gave up just one hit, walked none, and struck out seven. His perfect game was broken up by Jose Tabata when he singled to right with no outs in the seventh.
OVERALL TEAM OF THE WEEK:
The San Diego Padres. San Diego was 5-1 against Atlanta and Pittsburgh this week and 5-2 overall. That's pretty impressive considering the fact that the Padres will probably finish under .500 this year and the Braves and Pirates will be in the playoffs. San Diego's weak offense outscored Atlanta 9-5 and Pittsburgh 10-4.
WORST INDIVIDUAL PERFORMANCE OF THE WEEK:
Diamondbacks' starter Patrick Corbin. On Tuesday, Corbin was the opposite of Cashner. The lefty gave up six runs on seven hits over two innings against the Dodgers. Crobin walked one and struck out one.
